Flexion Distraction Therapy

How it works

A flexion distraction table moves the lower section of the table through a slow, controlled range while your spine stays supported. That movement creates space between the vertebrae and reduces pressure on the disc and the nerve roots around it.

It is one of the gentlest tools in the clinic. There is no thrust and no rotation, which makes it an option for people who are in too much pain for hands-on technique, and for people who simply do not want to be twisted or cracked.

It is rarely used on its own. Most treatment plans pair it with hands-on work and rehabilitation, with the decompression doing the early work of settling things down enough for the rest to be useful.

Questions

About Flexion Distraction Therapy

No. Most people describe it as a gentle stretch through the lower back and find it relieving rather than uncomfortable. There is no cracking and no forceful movement involved.

No. An inversion table hangs you upside down and relies on gravity. A flexion distraction table moves specific segments of your spine through a controlled range while you stay supported and horizontal.

It is often used for disc and sciatic presentations, and for people who cannot tolerate or do not want manual adjustment. Suitability is confirmed at your assessment, as it is not appropriate for every condition.

That depends on what the assessment finds and how long the issue has been there. Decompression is usually part of a broader plan rather than a standalone course of treatment.

Also available

Often used alongside this.

Chiropractic Care

Manual adjustment and joint mobilisation to improve spinal function, reduce discomfort and restore movement where joints have stopped working properly.

Dry Needling

Fine needles into trigger points within tight or overactive muscle to release tension and reduce referred pain. Works well alongside hands-on treatment.

Myofascial Cupping

Suction applied to skin and underlying tissue to release muscular tension, support circulation and assist recovery, particularly for physically demanding work.
